A large portion of unpleasant cold and allergy symptoms stem from the buildup and outflow of sinus drainage. While annoying to deal with, sinus excess drainage can be eased in a variety of simple and cheap ways.
What Is Sinus Drainage?
Sinus drainage is the result of the mucous membranes in the nasal cavity and sinuses becoming irritated. As the tissue becomes aggravated, it releases increasing amounts of mucus to try to flush out dust and germs.
Thickness
Sinus drainage can vary between being thin and watery or extremely thick and dark yellow/green. Bright-colored mucus may be an indicator of a sinus infection or other illness.
Causes
Increased sinus drainage, also called post-nasal drip, can be a reaction to seasonal allergies, sinus infection or gastroesophageal reflux.
Effects
Excess drainage can exacerbate symptoms of bad breath (halitosis) and sinus infections. Too much drainage in the stomach can cause nausea and vomiting as well as throat irritation.
Treatment
Over-the-counter decongestants and antihistamines can often help relieve symptoms, as can nasal sprays. Use of a neti pot or nasal irrigation device can also help clear out irritants and prevent the creation of drainage.
