Replace A Honeywell Round Thermostat

The most recognized and dependable thermostat on the market is, perhaps, the tan-colored, round Honeywell thermostat. A simple dial and two small switches are the norm for this decades-old temperature controller. By following a basic set of procedures, the thermostat can be replaced in a matter of a few minutes.

Instructions

1. Unpack the new thermostat, and check the condition, looking for any damage. Be sure that all the parts are included in the package. There should be a packing list that identifies all the new parts.

2. Turn off the electrical power to the furnace unit, then use the slotted screwdriver to carefully pry the outer ring off of the thermostat. Remove the control unit from the wall base mounting plate by unscrewing the two mounting screws. You should now be able to see the thermostat's wires and the two mounting screws that hold the base unit to the wall.

3. Use the Scotch tape and pen to identify the wires and where they are connected on the base unit. Tear a short piece of tape from the roll and attach it to the end of the wire as you remove it from the terminal screw. Mark the corresponding letter on the tape with the pen.

4. Remove the old mounting plate from the wall. Install the new mounting base plate with the new screws provided in the thermostat package. You will notice two level lines on the base, one vertical and one horizontal. Use the small level to correctly align the base plate and secure it to the wall. Be sure to feed the control wires through the large hole marked Wire.

5. Terminate the control wires to the thermostat per the identification tags you made earlier. Reinstall the new control unit and the outer cover ring. Turn on the power, and test the thermostat by placing the unit in either the automatic heat or cool mode. Allow the unit to operate for a few minutes to fully test the on-and-off operation of the thermostat.

Tips Warnings

Older Honeywell round-unit thermostats contain a vial of mercury for the switching operation. Be sure to check with local regulations for the proper disposal of the thermostat.
