Finding a bathtub that fits or ideas retrofit a new tub
I have a home built in the early sixties and am hoping to remove the original blue tub, there is no sense in refinishing it, the overflow drain leeks and the tile surround has settled and is no longer water tight. So time to replace the whole set up, the problem I am having is finding a tub that can fit, the current tub is almost hour glass shaped and 60 long, but only 28 wide, wouldn't be a problem, but its butted up next to a hot water baseboard heater and will only allow 29 1/4 max width, I have yet to find a tub under 30 wide, hoping someone can give me some advice or know where to find on, I have had plumbers look at it, but no one wants to do it, and I would really like to avoid moving the hot water heat lines as it adds an extra expense to an already expensive project. Thanks for your time, any advice will help. Welcome to the forums! You are doing a retrofit, so why not move the heater? It's just pipe. Do you have access below the tub and heater? How wide is your header wall (opposite the heater wall)? What Chandler said...........pipes are fairly easy to modify. But in replacing the tub, avoid plastic!!!! Cast iron would be my ist choice, then steel under porcelain. There are a few plastic(fiberglass) tubs that I might suggest. Any that do not require a supporting mush underneath. Most require a cement or some understructure to support the tub. AVOID those. If your existing floor is tile(and in good condition), a stone blade in the circular saw will trim things as needed. If other than tile, tear it all off. Oh man do I feel your pain. I'm pulling out my old 28 tub too, but replacing it with a shower...in theory. Supposedly you can't buy a 28 tub anymore because the FHA determined it was too narrow and stopped giving out mortgages on houses with a tub that size (which I kind of suspect to be untrue since we've both obviously bought the house we live in with that size of tub and we--my family--didn't buy ours from the original owner.) I'm assuming since you don't want to mess with it, that the baseboard heater is your heat source in the room. Is it possible to get a smaller unit for a reasonable price (I confess I don't know exactly how these are set up)? Then you could get a standard 30 tub....actually, wait....do you have a galley style bathroom? You may not have enough room to put in a wider tub and still have reasonable mobility anyway (if it's already cramped). Have you checked into refinishing it? Or looked at a plumbing salvage type place for a white (or whatever color) one? I've seen decent looking tubs that were used at like the Habitat for Humanity ReStore (no specific sizes though). After that if you just want a plastic surround, I found this one from HomeDepot (no clue about the quality/durability of this brand).
