Anyone age 50 or older can join AARP, formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons. With 40 million members, the non-profit organization is one of the largest in the United States. AARP advocates for its members, lobbies Congress and state governments, sells insurance and financial products, offers advice and publishes magazines and newsletters in English and Spanish. Those who join AARP can include a spouse or partner for free.

While the organization used to be directed toward retired workers, it now assists those still in the workforce and those who are retired and their spouses or partners. Membership
Spouses or partners can join AARP for free.
Click a button online to join AARP, change or update membership information, or add a spouse or partner. To sign up, go to the AARP.org website and click the Membership tab or button. Membership costs $16 per year. Associate memberships, without AARP benefits, are available for those younger than 50. The associate membership automatically converts to a full membership when that person turns 50.
Benefits
AARP benefits include discounts on travel services, groceries, entertainment and more.
AARP membership includes discounts on services ranging from floral delivery to health insurance. Members need only show their AARP card to get discounts at hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, delivery services and more. Discount coupons and specials are available at the AARP website and in its publications. AARP sells a variety of insurance products, including health, auto, home and life.
Controversy
AARP grew to become one of the largest special-interest organizations in the United States and, as such, has garnered criticism about its size, lobbying and influence. Controversy about AARP's support for health insurance reform led to about 60,000 members leaving AARP in 2009, but also is credited for thousands of new memberships.
History
AARP was founded by Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus in 1958 as the American Association of Retired Persons. It has offices in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the United States Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. AARP is made up of 2,400 local chapters.
