Armadillos are pesky little creatures. Not only can they be hard to get rid of, but they can dig up a garden or yard quite easily in search of grubs and other food. There are several household remedies that are said to get rid of armadillos. You may have to try one or several before you find the one that works for you. A combination of a couple of these home remedies might be the best bet. Try a couple or try them all. All you have to lose is your armadillo problem.
Instructions
1. Buy a can of cayenne pepper. Go into your yard and figure out where the armadillos have been digging. Sprinkle the pepper around the area, and also around your plants.
2. Use a hot pepper spray concoction to get rid of armadillos. Let 1 cup of crushed hot chilies soak in a gallon of water for a week. Put the gallon container in an area where the sun will hit it; that way, the chilies can steep. Once the week is up, strain the mixture, put the liquid in a spray bottle and spray plants and areas where the armadillos have dug in your yard.
3. Brush your dog or cat and collect its fur for placement in your yard. The fur is likely to blow around, so you might have to repeat the process often. The scent from the animal will repel the armadillo, as it will smell the predator and be scared off.
4. Allow your dog or cat to urinate in your yard. Just as dog or cat fur can repel an armadillo, the urine will act in the same manner.(This may not be the best method, because the urine could damage plants if they get sprayed.)
5. Hang from your tree branches bars of soap that possess a strong scent. You can also hang bars of soap from the shrubs, as well. Put the soap in a mesh-type bag and tie it off with twine. Then knot the twine to form a loop and hang it from the shrubs or branches. The strong fragrance will provide a deterrent for armadillos.
6. Pour ammonia into a spray bottle and spray the areas where the armadillos have dug. Placing mothballs in those areas will act in the same way, if you'd rather not work with ammonia because of its odor. Mothballs also have a strong odor, and may need to be replaced often, because the air outside will quickly reduce their effectiveness.
Tips Warnings
Proper fencing is a foolproof way to keep armadillos out. Traps are another way to get rid of armadillos; however, if you can keep them from entering your yard altogether, that's even better.
Use caution when handling cayenne pepper or hot chilies. Use gloves and protective eyewear to make sure you don't get any chili in your eyes.
