hydronic-baseboard-heaters-more-efficient

Hydronic baseboard heaters more efficient?

Considering upgrading my 20 year old electric baseboard heaters to the hydronic baseboard heaters. Are these more efficient than the electric ones? Just wondering why the cost of these units are more than twice that of electic ones. Are you talking about taking out the electric heat over to boiler, and hot water baseboard in place, or oil/fluid filled electric baseboard? The oil/fluid filled electric baseboard heaters. They may save some money, since there is a Mass to store the heat after the t-stat turns off the baseboard. Also with this style, the heat coming off it is softer, and going to feel more even.. What going to really save you money is switching those manual bi-metal switch t-stat to electronic digital stat.. We used to rent an apt that had electric baseboard, and I switched the 3 stat over, and saw a drop in electric, and also no large temp swing! I actually did just switch one of our rooms to a digital t-stat and it is working just fine. The only odd thing is that the temperature reading is 4-5 degrees warmer than the actual temperature in the room when turned on. When it is off the temperature reading is correct. Do you know why this is? Originally Posted by nathanofseattle How much savings did you notice? Ohh man... it has been a few years... I am guessing we saved about $20 a month??? Do you know why this is? You're saying when it's on, it jumps up about 4˚, the back down after it shuts off?? What's the make/model of the t-stat? Honeywell RLV430A http://yourhome.honeywell.com/Consum...ge/Default.htm Comparing to 2 working digital thermometers, the Honeywell thermostat reads 4-5 degrees (Fahrenheit) warmer than the actual temperature of the room when it is on. If the thermostat is off, the Honeywell thermostat matches the temperature reading in the room. The fluid filled electric baseboards are no more efficient than regular electric baseboards. They do run at a lower surface temperature so they are safer. Less likely to set things on fire if they fall onto the baseboard and less likely for little kids to get severely burned. I cant say why it is Electric heat is 100% out with no loss. But any homes I know of here that have put the oil filled base board in after just the element kind. The fuel bill has been higher than it was with the old baseboard. Thanks for your responses. I don't see any reason to purchase the hydronic baseboard heaters at the current cost.
