Being a large city, Atlanta has a significant number of citizens living in poverty. Luckily, several organizations have opened food banks to offer assistance. The organizations are almost always non-for-profit, and, therefore, need volunteers. There are plenty of opportunities for those seeking volunteer opportunities in the Atlanta, area.
Atlanta Community Food Bank
The Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB), is a large food-distribution facility that sends more than two million pounds of food to some 700 nonprofit agencies and 38 counties in the Atlanta area. ACFB has been in operation since 1979 and operates out of a facility in western Atlanta. It serves children to working families. The AFCB receives help from more than 15,000 volunteers each year, and accepts volunteers ages 8 and older. It will also accept volunteer groups up to 25 people. Volunteer opportunities include food sorting, helping in the ACFB's community garden, and providing assistance with taxes.
The Open Door Community
The Open Door Community is a religious organziation that offers food and targeted ministries to those in need.
The Open Door Community is a Christian organization that aids those in need. The group believes in dismantling racism, sexism, and heterosexism, as well as the abolition of the death penalty. The group has a prison ministry, which allows local families to visit central Georgia's Hardwick Prisons. Areas that need volunteers include the group's medical and foot clinics, shower facilities, and food service facilities. The group serves lunch through its soup kitchen on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Volunteers work from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Trinity Table
Trinity Table is the oldest Sunday-only soup kitchen in the Atlanta area. It is run by Trinity Community Ministries, an organization that relies heavily on volunteers from local churches and organizations. Trinity Table begins service at 12:30 p.m. On a typical Sunday, Trinity serves food to more than 300 individuals in four half-hour sessions. If requested, attendees can receive spiritual support as well. Guests sit at tables of eight and are served by two waiters.
Caf 458
In Atlanta's historic Sweet Auburn District is Caf 458, an award-winning restaurant that offers Sunday brunch and a number of other programs. Caf 458 is partnered with the Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency. Kitchen volunteers work from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sundays. Primary responsibilities include working as a line cook, greeting guests, waiting tables, and general cleaning. Caf 458 also has a program called CareerWorks, which helps homeless men and women get jobs. Volunteers are needed in the mornings throughout the weekend.
