Create Stair Treads From Floor Carpet Tiles
Carpet tiles are versatile and great to use for all kinds of tricky spots. One of the best places to use carpet tiles is on a stair way. Adding carpet to stairs is a difficult job. A runner must be attached firmly at the top, the bottom and secured on each stair to avoid the carpet pulling loose. Loose carpet on the stairs can be very dangerous. Carpet tiles are a great solution. They can be cut to size with a straight edge and come with an adhesive backing for easy installation.
Instructions
1. Clean the stairs to remove dirt and grime. The adhesive backing on the carpet tiles will adhere more firmly if the surface is clean and free of oils and dirt. Clean the stairs using a mild soap and water. Use a sponge to clean the stairs and rinse with clean water. Dry the stairs immediately.
2. Measure the first stair. Decide how wide you want the stair tread to be. If you can use a measurement that evenly divides by the width of the carpet tiles you will not have as much carpet-tile cutting to do.
3. Cut the first set of carpet tiles. Measure the tile to match the measurement of the step. Turn the tile over so that the adhesive side is up. Mark the a straight line across the back of the tile with a pencil. Use a straight edge to cut the tile.
4. Measure from both ends of the stair to make sure that the tile will be centered. Remove the adhesive backing and stick the carpet tile to the stair. Refer to manufacturer's instructions to adhere the tiles.
5. Repeat for each stair. Often stairs are different length or width, particularly on circular staircases. Do not assume that all carpet tiles should be cut to the same width.
