Make circus costumes for your children.
There are many reasons why you might need to come up with circus costumes for your children: Your child is in a school play. It's almost Halloween. Your kids and their friends have an elaborate scheme to pass a summer week. This is not an impossible or expensive task. Using clothing and objects you may already have, as well as inexpensive additions from thrift stores, your children can be outfitted in their circus finery in very little time.
Clown
It's not a circus without a clown, and you can outfit yours inexpensively. Find old golf slacks in a bright color and pair them with an even brighter set of suspenders. Use a colorful print shirt for the costume top. Find large fuzzy slippers or animal slippers for shoes. Add some clown makeup and perhaps a bicycle horn, top it off with a fuzzy wig, and your clown is ready to entertain.
Ringmaster
The head of the circus needs to look important, so search a thrift shop for a black suit. Add a white shirt and colorful bow tie. A ringmaster needs a top hat, so create one from construction paper if you can't find a used one. Purchase a fine black mustache to complete the look.
Acrobats
Acrobats are flashy, whether male or female. Begin with tights and a leotard. Make sure that these are old ones that won't be needed later. Use craft glue to add glitter to the edges of the neck and sleeves in bright colors, and make designs on the body of the leotard. Find ballet slippers for shoes, and your acrobats will be ready to create their breathtaking acts.
Lion Tamer
The lion tamer craves attention, whether with a real lion or the smaller version with a stuffed animal. Find a creamy white suit for the beginning of the costume. Glue silver glitter to the edges of the lapels and down the front of the suit. White shoes add to the costume, if you can find them. Finish the costume with a whip made from a jump rope and a stuffed lion.
