The Average Salary Of An Account Executive

Account executives work in many different fields. Another common name for them is salesperson. The median salary for an account executive in advertising is about $65,000 per year. More experienced (senior) account executives can make $80,000 annually or more. The salary ranges also depend on geographical location and industry, as well as experience level and education.

Business Development

Business development salaries depend on company, location, industry, experience and benefits. Business development consists of marketing the company to individuals or other companies (called b2b, or business to business) for obtaining a larger share of sales, whether the company is product- or service-oriented. Business development specialists are also called sales consultants. The average salary for business development account executives is $54,000-$70,000 per year.

IT (Information Technology)

IT account executives are the primary face of their service industry. As with all salesmen, they prospect for new clients, service existing clients and set earnings goals to sell information technology services and solutions. Typically, they have a set base salary and also earn commissions, which can be higher than the base salary amount for top-performers who work with the large-volume corporations. Though these jobs depend highly on performance and base pay is $18,000-$24,000 per year, the average salary for an account executive in the IT field can go as high as the low six-figure level with some earnest time investment.

Pharmaceuticals and Insurance

Pharmaceutical account executives sell pharmaceuticals (medicines) and also medical supplies. An account executive can make a base sales salary of $40,000-$55,000, depending on factors such as experience. A recent college grad will start off with far less, in the low to mid-$30,000 range. Current income could be used as a guideline to determine base starting salary. Account executives who excel can expect commissions that far exceed their base pay.

Media and Advertising

Media account executives work in advertising, promotions, public relations and marketing. Advertising and media account executives are typically paid a starting salary of $26,000 per year. More experienced ad reps make closer to $45,000 per year. Management level positions in this industry pay considerably more, from almost $50,000 per year for ad and promo managers to more than $150,000 per year for marketing managers.

Sales Managers

A sales manager's position is usually considered the end of the line for job growth and promotion as an account executive. A sales manager's or executive's salary will average in the $250,000-$315,000 range, with some making on the lower or higher end of that range.
