Describe Chest Pain Before A Heart Attack

Often, the symptoms of a heart attack mimic other less severe conditions, such as heartburn or panic attacks. However, anyone who has ever had a heart attack knows that the chest pain associated with a genuine heart attack can be overwhelming and unlike any other pain.

Identification

Identify a heart attack by a lasting, uncomfortable pressure in the chest that feels like fullness in the center of the chest. Many people say it feels like an elephant is sitting on their chest.

Misconceptions

Many people think that chest pain is just heartburn. However, along with the chest pressure, you might also feel lightheaded or dizzy and have tingling or numbness in the back, shoulder or neck. You may also have a feeling of impending doom (characterized by an anxious feeling that something bad is about to happen), indicating a possible heart attack.

Time Frame

Research has shown an individual suffering a heart attack has a better chance of survival if he gets to the hospital in 90 minutes or less, than someone who arrives later. It's best to call 911 if you suspect your chest pain means you're having a heart attack.

Prevention/Solution

To prevent chest pain or heart attack, it is important to live a heart-healthy lifestyle. Stay active, eat healthful foods and avoid stress whenever possible.

Warning

You may have chest pain that goes away and then comes back, don't hesitate to call 911 or get emergency help. The faster you receive medical attention, the more likely it is that you will survive.
