Make A Light Craft

Homemade light crafts are both decorative and functional. You can make indoor or outdoor lights to suit your personal style using a few supplies from the craft store. Solar string lights for outdoor light craft projects are available from online retailers and local home supply centers. You can use a strand of electrical lights for your indoor light crafts. Make lights to line a garden path or to provide a nightly glow in your child's room. Decorate the lights with glass paint, stained-glass paint or flat-backed glass stones to add translucent color to your project.

Instructions

1. Select the desired size of glass craft block best suited for the location of the landscape lights. Smaller size blocks work best for a row of walkway lights, but you may prefer a larger size to highlight a spot in the garden. Glass craft blocks have pre-drilled holes on one edge, suitable for a power cord pass-through.

2. Select a template that fits your landscape d cor. Reusable templates are available from craft stores, but you can make your own with a cutout from a magazine. The image should fit onto the front or back of the glass block.

3. Tape the template onto the glass block. Trace the outline of the image with a permanent marker or glass paint pen the same color as the paint you will use. For example, outline a flower that you plan to paint yellow with a yellow marker or paint pen. Outline the green stem with a green marker or pen. Remove the template.

4. Fill inside the template lines with the desired color of glass paint. Allow the paint to dry.

5. Repeat Step 3 and 4 to paint the opposite side of the glass block. Remove the plastic cover over the pre-drilled hole. Place the block upright on a tin-foil covered baking sheet. Bake the block in the oven according to the glass paint manufacturer's directions. Remove the baking sheet and allow the glass block to cool.

6. Insert a strand of solar lights inside the glass block. Run the cord through the pre-drilled hole and attach it to the solar panel. Place the solar panel in a sunny location on your property, near the glass block light.

Tips Warnings

Hide the power cord running from the light to the solar panel with mulch or bury it in a shallow trench.
