Birthday parties for 60-year-olds provide unique opportunities for creative table decorations.
Sixty years counts for a lot. Going back to the 1950s and 1960s can provide tons of creative ways to create a party tabletop that's fun and rich in nostalgia. Use ideas that support the party theme. Most of all, make sure that whatever you use has special meaning and brings back fond memories for the guest of honor.
Oldies But Goodies
A 60th birthday party naturally calls for a 1960s music theme. Add to the theme by creating a table centerpiece that celebrates music from back in the day. If you're handy with just a bit of design software, you can create paper centerpieces that mimic vinyl record albums and feature artists like Elvis, Buddy Holly, The Supremes and The Temptations. All you have to do is create circles, and color them in black and incorporate an additional circle to look like the label for a recording. From there you can have fun and create song titles that are specific to the guest of honor, or replicate songs from any and every era that are favorites of the birthday party honoree. Cut out the album graphics and attach them to wooden skewer sticks, then place them inside bowls of chips, dip, and snacks on tables throughout the party areas.
Old School Movie Candy Tabletop
Party guests love to munch on sweets during a party. Make their munching memorable by placing candy dishes filled with candy throwbacks from yesteryear. Place bowls of licorice, caramels and boxes of candies that were popular at movie theaters like Milk Duds, Mary Janes, and Mike and Ikes. You could even make caramel popcorn balls wrapped in cellophane, and print mini movie posters of movies that were favorites of the birthday party guest of honor and create an entire theme. Find a small and even inoperable TV from a garage sale or resale store and place it on the table to complete a movie throwback tabletop design.
The Way We Wore
Once the main table is set with food, plates and dinnerware you can add elements to take it back to the way we wore. Find items that go back to the 1960s era like circular-style granny glasses, love beads and tie-dyed T-shirts. Add the elements in between food dishes to give the table setting a true 1960s appeal.
Tea Light Candles
Add glowing drama to the table with simple tea light candles. Use glass plates and a base of either foil or clear glass marbles underneath and place the tea light candles on top. The light will bounce and sparkle from the foil and glass to create a wonderful effect. Stage the plates holding the tea lights in different areas of the table. Designate and clear an area on the table for a birthday cake. Light the tea light candles, candles on the birthday cake and turn off room lights. Then gather guests into the room for a glowing happy birthday tabletop treat.
