Odd Scholarships & Grants

Among the unusual awards available are scholarships for twins.

Scholarships and grants offer students a way to pay for college without obtaining a loan. Numerous awards are available based on financial need, outstanding academic achievement or planned occupation. However, you can also find awards for which eligibility is based on physique, lifestyle, past activities or other unusual criteria. Although academic standing or financial need may be a factor, competition is reduced since fewer students are eligible.

Left-Handed Students

The Frederick and Mary F. Buckley Scholarship is for sophomores, juniors and seniors attending Juniata College in Pennsylvania who are left-handed. The scholarship pays between $1,000 and $1,500 per year. In addition to being southpaws, students need to prove financial need and academic success. Students should apply through the college's financial aid office.

Tall Students

Tall Clubs International awards scholarships to students who meet the minimum height requirements, are younger than 21 and who will be college freshmen in the next fall semester. Women must be at least 5 feet 10 inches tall, and men must be at least 6 feet 2 inches. Scholarships are as much as $1,000 each. To apply, students should contact the Tall Clubs International chapter closest to them and request information on the club's scholarship program. All applications must originate with a chapter nomination.

Twins

Twinsburg, Ohio hosts the Twins Days Festival annually. During the festival, one pair of twins receives a $1,000 scholarship to help defray college expenses. Twins must be seniors in high school and have been registered attendees at three of the previous five festivals. Applications are available from the Twins Days Festival Committee. Also, the Massachusetts Mothers of Twins offers scholarships ranging from $250 to $500 to members who have been active members for at least two years. The scholarships are available to mothers of twins as well as the twins themselves. Applications are available on the organization's website.

Parapsychology Students

Parapsychologists combine the science of psychology with the study of the paranormal, such as ghosts or telepathy. The Parapsychology Foundation awards the Eileen J. Garrett Scholarship annually to a student pursuing a study of parapsychology. The award is $3,000, and applicants must provide three letters of reference from people familiar with the student's work or studies in the field of parapsychology. The application packet must be received by July 15. More information is available at the website for the Parapsychology Foundation.

Caddies

The Western Golf Association offers the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship. Each award covers all housing and tuition costs and is renewable for up to four years. Applicants are selected on the basis of financial need, character, grades and record as a caddie. Applications are available from the WGA website. Students should apply at the start of their senior year of high school.
