Gamsat Tips On Essay Writing

In Australia, the GAMSAT must be taken when applying to medical school.

The Graduate Australian Medical School Admission Test is known as the GAMSAT. Part of the GAMSAT is to write two essays, each one based on a quotation. The amount of time allotted for these essays is 30 minutes each. In order to pass the GAMSAT, you must get a passing grade on both essays.

Practice, Practice, Practice

The only way to get better at the GAMSAT essay topics is to practice. Set up a testing situation for yourself and set a timer for 30 minutes. Pick sample GAMSAT essay topics and write an essay. After writing it, have someone else read it to see if it is coherent and intelligent. The more practice essays you can do, the better prepared you will be during test time to finish the essays in the time allotted.

Organization

Each essay is allotted only 30 minutes to complete. Being organized in how you spend your time is key to finishing the essay. Give yourself no more than five to ten minutes to brainstorm. The remaining 20 to 25 minutes should be on writing. Having an organized writing style also helps. Start with a quick intro of three to five sentences, followed by two to three supporting paragraphs and the conclusion.

Preparation Course

Take a preparation course if possible. In a prep course, you will get practice on essay writing, an instructor who can edit your pieces and give you feedback, and practice on staying with your timetable.

Read

The essay questions can often be difficult to read and comprehend. Vocabulary words that are obscure may be used. In order to complete the questions quickly, a knowledge of more complex vocabulary is helpful. Read newspapers, essays written by others, as well as research papers to get a better vocabulary base. You cannot write an essay on a topic that you do not understand.
