Filling out applications for Section 8 housing correctly can keep delays to a minimum.


Filling out a Section 8 application correctly can lead to fewer delays and faster placement in a home. That is why applicants should preread the application to become familiar with the questions as well as ensure the proper information is provided and attached for the housing authority.


Instructions


1. Complete an application online or in person. Pick up an application from the application office or call the application office to request an application be mailed to you. In most cases, when applying online you will be required to pay a nominal fee. Many online services that provide an online application are not associated with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, and thus will process the application more quickly for a fee.


2. Complete the application as directed. You will be required to provide general information about yourself, including your name and address, employment history, rental history, income and information about your household, including the number of persons who will reside at the property if granted placement in the program.








3. Sign and date the application and return it to the application office. An application can only be processed with a legal signature, proof of income and applicable identification. You will be asked to provide a Social Security number with your application.


4. Fact-check the application. Confirm all information is correct, moving line by line and fact-checking each date, number and name. Be sure to check for spelling errors. Double-check that you have provided the appropriate documents to support your case.








5. Receive confirmation that you have been placed on the Housing Authority waiting list. You will receive a priority code, stating your placement on the waiting list. At this time you will also be given a time and date for an eligibility interview. The determination will be made based on the information provided, the degree of need and availability of housing.
