Medical School Admission Requirements

Medical school admission requirements can vary from school to school, but there are a few guidelines you can follow.

Have a Bachelor's Degree

Most schools will not take student who does not have a bachelor's degree, so you'll need to earn one from an accredited school. Recommended majors include biology, physiology, anatomy and any other natural science, although a science-based major is not a requirement to admission.

Take the MCAT

Taking the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a requirement of almost every medical school in the United States. Some schools require a minimum score, while others require it as a formality.

Undergraduate Pre-Med Courses

If your college or university offers a pre-med course list, take as many as you can.

GPA

Because medical school acceptance is very competitive, you will need a good GPA. Most universities recommend a GPA of at least 3.5.

Volunteer Work and Activities

Many applicants do volunteer work or student activities such as clubs or competition. Universities see this as passion and dedication, and are more likely to accept you this way.
