Adult education
centers are easy to find in most areas, but if you're looking for specialized classes, then you may have to do some searching. You should try to locate a center that provides free courses that are funded by the government.
Instructions
1. Contact local community colleges for places that offer GED preparation courses. Start your search near the beginning of a quarter so that you'll increase your chances of taking classes immediately. If one place doesn't have courses that fit your schedule, broaden your search.
2. Look for enrichment courses at local universities. Take non-credited classes unless you plan to get a degree because they will be less expensive. Some states have policies that allow senior citizens to take a few classes each semester free.
3. Flip through your phone book to find the numbers for community centers and libraries. These places often host ESL programs and other language courses that are taught by volunteers. Be sure that the director of the courses has ESL certification and training before you sign up for classes.
4. Locate special adult education classes in specific subjects. Check the websites of large state universities to see if you can take adult education classes online, but remember that these courses might be expensive. Make sure that you've exhausted all options for taking the class locally before you decide to pay for an online program.
5. Call your state's department of education if you are having troubling finding adult education courses that you believe should be subsidized by the government. Ask for the contact information of an adult education center in your area, but realize that the state department doesn't usually have records of class availability and schedules.
6. Meet with a guidance counselor at the adult education center to discuss any tuition costs. If the class you want to take isn't funded by the state, ask if you are eligible for financial assistance or an education loan. Inquire about scholarships for adult students and ask your employer to help pay for your coursework.
