Prepare for the United States citizenship test by studying key documents along with the country's history and government structure. Employ strategies as you would for any other test. It's a good idea to start studying for the exam right after you apply for citizenship.
Instructions
1. Set up a study plan. Once you have filed the INS-400 application form for citizenship, you should know when your test date is. Allow yourself enough time to fill in any information gaps, get some help, if necessary, and to review.
2. Understand the topics. Review items such as government structure, history, the Constitution and Declaration of Independence, your responsibilities as a citizen and your basic rights. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website has all this information.
3. Find a non-profit adult education center near you. Some community adult education centers have courses, preparation materials and sample quizzes or tests on paper or on their websites.
4. Immerse yourself in the news. Watching television, listening to the radio and reading newspapers help you understand more about the federal government, state governments and civics in general. It also helps improve language skills, if you need more practice in that area.
5. Take sample tests. There are practice questions on the USCIS website and practice tests available through citizenship courses or available online.
6. Use flash cards or quick questions and answers pulled from study materials. The USCIS website has downloadable flash cards. You also can order the flash cards by phone. Have a friend or family member quiz you frequently.
