Start College Early

Starting college early is a great way to expand your educational horizons.

Some students feel that classes are not challenging enough in the latter years of high school, and these bright young minds could benefit from greater academic stimulation. When this situation occurs, early enrollment in a community college or university is a good option. Although the requirements for early enrollment in college vary from state to state, all states have some form of program to aid students who desire to get started with their college careers early.

Instructions

1. Talk to your guidance counselor to find out what requirements and regulations there are for starting college early in your state of residence. Discuss options for nearby colleges at which you can take courses early. Ask for the application packets and other materials you need to get started. Request copies of your high school transcripts from your guidance counselor at your appointment as well.

2. Call your county or parish's Board of Education and ask if successful completion of college coursework while still enrolled in high school will substitute for a portion of high school coursework. Ask if your state offers any kind of testing to shave time off your high school requirements as well. Register for the test(s) and take them if your state participates in such a program.

3. Begin your concurrent enrollment in college. Complete your coursework successfully with a passing grade. Follow up by informing your high school that you have passed your college courses and allow time for your high school administrators to apply the credit to your high school transcripts. Meet with your high school guidance counselor once again to determine how much time you have cut from your high school requirements.

4. Graduate from your high school early. Have administrators send your completed high school transcript and copies of your diploma to the college you have been attending. Register for a normal course load beginning with the next regular semester and start attending your college classes early.
