Engineering students can get financial support through a university endowed scholarship.
There are a number of scholarships available through colleges, universities, the private sector and various organizations that can help engineering majors pay for their education. When applying, pay close attention to the scholarship's requirements, deadlines and any documentation that must be provided to be eligible.
Utah State University
Rio Tinto Kennecott, a major mining company, helps provide a scholarship for engineering majors through the university. There are six scholarships offered, each worth $6,000 as of the 2011-2012 school year. The scholarship can be renewed yearly by reapplying. You must be a sophomore, junior or senior and attend Utah State University full time. You also will have to maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA and be majoring in engineering or in human resources in the school of business. You must provide your transcript, two letters of reference and a resume.
Florida Engineering Society
The Florida Engineering Society offers a number of scholarships for engineering majors, such as the Cesar A. Calas/FES Miami Chapter Scholarship, worth $1,000. You must be enrolled in a school that the group's scholarship committee approves of and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. You also must attend school full time and have a permanent address in either Miami-Dade or Monroe counties. The Raymond W. Miller, PE Scholarship provides $2,500 in funding and you must be attending a school approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology. You will have a greater chance of winning if you plan to attend the University of Florida.
University of Washington
The University of Washington Emerging Leader Scholars Program focuses on keeping engineering students who show leadership abilities in the field. The scholarship awards $5,000 and can be renewed for up to four school years. You will be chosen based on your skills as a leader, academic performance and career goals. Winners also will attend seminars, participate in research activities and receive career assistance. Recipients act as representatives for the program, speaking about engineering to various groups.
Texas A&M University
Texas A&M University offers an undergraduate scholarship for students who are enrolled in the engineering program and pursuing their first bachelor's degree. Recipients must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75. The deadline for applying is set at Feb. 1 annually. Financial need, academic performance and leadership potential are all considerations.
