Anesthesia technicians are professional health care team members trained to operate anesthesia equipment and related equipment, under the supervision of anesthesiologists, anesthetist nurses and anesthesiologist assistants. The American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) is responsible for the training curriculum and certification process for anesthesia technicians.
Program
Anesthesia technician training programs are available through in-class and a combination of classroom-based and online studies. Some programs offer admittance to individuals with no previous training in the field, while others require prospective students have worked as anesthesia support staff members for a minimum of two years prior to admission.
Curriculum
Students can obtain either a certificate of completion or associate of applied science degree in the field. The courses in the certificate program include anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, anesthesia equipment principles and applications and anesthesia technology. Degree programs include similar core courses as well as general education courses, such as English composition and general psychology, for a well-rounded education. Both programs include practical experience through several clinical placements. Clinical training takes place in local hospitals under the supervision of department staff.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the associate degree program, graduates can immediately take the certifying examination administered by the ASATT. Graduates of the certificate program must obtain employment in the field for a minimum of 18 months prior to admittance to the certification examination.
