A degree in counseling from one of the top-ranked colleges will prepare you for a career in one or more of several different possibilities.








A degree in counseling can be applied to becoming a school counselor, marriage and family therapist, rehabilitation therapist, or private practice counselor. The demand for professionals in the industry is supposed to increase steadily, as of 2010, as people seek more help and preventative care, according to U.S. College Search. University of Missouri--Columbia


The University of Missouri in Columbia offers a bachelor's degree in counseling psychology--one of the top programs in the country, according to Social Psychology Network. The program approaches counseling from a culturally sensitive direction, focusing heavily on social justice and other relevant issues that counselors face in the profession. UM Columbia's program has been accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 1953. Upon graduation with a counseling psychology degree, students have the opportunity to earn master's degrees in school counseling, career counseling and development, or sports psychology.

The University of Maryland in College Park offers two of the top-ranked master's programs for counseling in the U.S., according to Social Psychology Network. The first, Master of Rehabilitation Counseling, teaches individuals to improve the functionality and quality of life of people with mental and physical disabilities, diseases, injuries, and substance abuse histories. The second, Master of School Counseling, prepares and certifies students in the social and academic issues that arise in school settings, and guide students through the decision-making process as they get older. These programs are part of the Department of Counseling and Personnel Services.

The University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, offers a U.S. top-ranked doctoral program in counseling psychology and prepares students for careers in private counseling, education, and rehabilitation settings. Fully accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), the counseling psychology degree trains future professionals to help people with functional problems develop and improve over the course of their lives. To be accepted into the program, you must have a bachelor's degree in psychology. The master's degree is earned during the Ph.D. program.
