Kenmore 80 series washer wont drain or spin

Kenmore 80 Series Washer won't drain or spin

First noticed the problem the other night during a wash when the dining room lights would go dim every minute or so. Usually this happens once or twice per load when the cycle changes from wash to spin, etc. Went down to check it out and found that the water had drained halfway, and spin would not engage. There was a humming sound, and it seemed the washer would try to engage the spin cycle every minute or so (thus the light flicker upstairs), but nothing would happen. The washer does agitate. I've poured over this forum but nothing sounds exactly like my problem. I don't think it's the lid switch because lowering the lid engages the humming sound. I took off the water pump and didn't see anything stuck inside. Should the drum turn freely when the machine is off? It does not. Anything to help me narrow it down would be very much appreciated. This board is great. Post model # need to see what washer you have. Did you try the motor in spin when you had pump off. I always lean washer back against wall uclip pump, pull off shaft, leave hoses attached and set washer back down and try in spin. If runs something stuck in pump and will need to be replaced. Thanks for the reply. I did as you suggested and ran the machine in spin with the water pump off. It still did not spin and the motor made the same humming sound. The model number of the Kenmore Washer is 110.16882503 What would you check next? Using the following link......click on view full size under the small illustration. It will open in a new window. Click on that pic to see a full size view. You can use arrows or cursor to navigate. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/part...prst=shdMod= The motor drive coupler is a common failure item but your unit still has agitate which means that is probably not the problem. The drive coupler is part # 13 in the diagram. The next common failure item is the spin clutch. You would need the clutch band assy. Part # 6 in the diagram. I am a little concerned that your tub did also not drain. Usually if the pump itself is clear it pumps out. You could possibly have a transmission issue but that would be my last choice. Watch the two part video in the link below. Very helpful for troubleshooting your problem. Washer Troubleshooting Guide I have the Whirlpool version of this machine. Pretty reliable unit. Your washer has a plastic timer in it that has had many problems, most are similar to yours. Do what I said before but disconnect motor and lat it on floor (leave wire connected) Try washer now and if does the same thing usually timer, But have seen the same thing with speed control. Timer causes the motor to try to run in both speeds at same time. To get to timer use a thin putty knife on each side of console, There are 2 spring clips to push back on each side. Console will hinge up. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/part...od=11016882503 Clips are part # 8 I replaced the timer and all is well and washer land. It was an easy job. Thank you for your help! Good news......thanks for stopping back and telling us. OK, the replacement of the timer worked. I thought it was 100% successful at first. But it appears the water level switch is now malfunctioning. The washer only fills halfway. I checked the hose and that's fine. I blew through it and heard the click in the switch. The current water level switch is only 6 months old. I replaced it in August after my machine (Kenmore 110.16882503) wouldn't stop filling. After the replacement it worked well for 6 months until just recently when the timer went. Seems a weird a coincidence that water level switch would go bad so quickly, and right after the timer needed replacement. Is it time for a new washer? Could there be something electrical shorting out these parts? Or is it really just bad luck? Almost never see a pressure switch go bad. It is the only thing that controls the water level. I see no common cause for your problems. The fill pressure switch has to be one of the least changed parts. I can count on one hand how many I've replaced. Hopefully yours is under warranty. Time for a new washer ...... NOT. I'm keeping mine until the tub rusts thru and then I may try to get one of those.
