generator-muffler

Generator muffler

Is there a way to make a 10 hp BS generator engine quieter? Like a better muffler or muffler attachment? Most generators are made quiet by placing them in a small doghouse-sized cover for a stationary installation. The exhaust can be directed into a buried barrel with a separate exhaust stack. Exhaust gases are most of the noise produced but not all of it. Same thing applies to an air compressor. I've never heard of that but I like the plan. Can you provide more detail on the buried barrel (size and how much of the barrel is buried) and how the exhaust gets routed there? I've got the same engine on a portable generator and it's loud. I haven't used it much for the past couple years, but I've been planning to find a small car muffler to install on it - guess I haven't done it because I don't want to take the time if it doesn't work. The barrel Idea sounds good for a stationary unit. I would be leary of installing an oversized muffler. I don't know for sure but would think that the added restriction might affect the way it runs. IMO the best way is to divert the exhaust [with pipe] further away thus directing most of the noise in a different direction. You really do NOT want to put the weight of a muffler on the threads just outside the exhaust valve - too much weight. Put whatever muffling device - auto muffler, barrel in the ground, etc. on a separate support and connect the two with flexible metal exhaust pipe. Here's a home-made (obviously) barrel muffler design: http://utterpower.com/muffler.htm You would need to adapt the plumbing to the size of exhaust pipe that you have. It is a stationary-preferable solution. I put a car muffler on an 8hp generator about 10 years ago. The generator was extremely loud to begin with and the oversized muffler made little difference. There was a lot of noise coming from the intake (sound getting out through the carb.), and there was a lot of noise coming through the case (I assume valves clanking). Hopefully you will have better luck with a more modern engine. Should have bought a Honda inverter... The Honda and Yamaha inverters seem to only come in the smaller sizes - 3500 watts seems to be the limit. I did observe a water-cooled Honda 6500 was much quieter and there are Hondas that are fully enclosed. . . . but pretty expensive.
