How Does An Online Law School Work

Application

One of the critical decisions anyone who decides to get an online law degree has to make is which school to attend. Even though California allows graduates from these schools to take the state bar, it does not vouch for any of these schools. However, it allows graduates to register with the state if they have met certain requirements, one of which is offering at least 864 hours of preparation and study per year.

Each online school has its own admission procedures and requirements. Most of these law schools do not require you to take the LSAT (Law School Admissions Test). Concord Law School, for example, one of the oldest online law schools and part of Kaplan University, conducts in-depth interviews with each applicant, after which an admission decision is made.

Attending and Passing the Bar

People who choose to attend online law schools are typically highly motivated and have busy lives. In some cases they do not have the luxury of leaving their current jobs to attend traditional law schools. Most online programs take between three and four years to complete. Since attending online law schools automatically prepares one for only practice in California at the onset, all online students must take and pass the First Year Law Students Examination, required of all law students in California. Students then subsequently take and pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination and eventually the California Bar Examination, upon completion of their legal studies.

After passing the bar, you are eligible to practice law in California. If you are interested in practicing in other states, you may need to practice in California for a few years before gaining admission to other state bars.
