Licensed Practical Nurses in Georgia must complete a nursing program and pass the NCLEX-PN.
LPNs, or licensed practical nurses, work in a variety of health-care environments including residences and medical facilities. Some of the health care duties LPNs perform are taking vital signs, recording health histories, and assisting with patient mobility. As our population ages, the demand for LPNs increases year by year. Becoming an LPN in Georgia requires obtaining licensure by completing an approved LPN program and passing a national test.
Instructions
1. Contact the Georgia Board of Examiners of Licensed Practical Nurses for a list of schools with approved practical nursing curriculum, if you are a resident of Georgia. The board is an office of the Georgia Secretary of State. If you are planning to complete a program in another state, and then obtaining an LPN license in Georgia, contact your state's nursing board and verify that your program is compatible with an approved Georgia curriculum.
2. Enroll in a state-board-approved practical nursing program. An LPN program takes one year to complete in Georgia and covers biological sciences and practical experience.
3. Register to take the NCLEX-PN exam with Pearson Vue, a testing company, and pay the $200 fee. Obtain an application for Licensure from the Georgia Board of Examiners of LPN. Include in your application proof of completion of a nursing program signed by the director of your program. Submit a notarized application. Receive confirmation from Pearson Vue and the LPN board, and then take and pass the test.
4. Submit to a fingerprint and background check. Out-of-state residents seeking an LPN license in Georgia must take the fingerprint test in Georgia. Georgia residents who hold an LPN from another state must submit an application for Licensure by Equivalency with proof of the NCLEX-PN exam, nursing education, and all former and current licenses.
