Rutgers University's doctoral program in American studies is an interdisciplinary program divided into six areas of concentration, including urban cultures, race, ethnicity, modern society, and women and gender studies. Doctoral candidates must choose two specialty areas in which to focus their studies as well as a third area in a broader discipline, such as history, political science or jazz. In addition to coursework and research requirements, doctoral candidates must also be able to demonstrate reading proficiency in a language other than English.

University of Hawaii
The University of Hawai'i at Manoa's doctoral program in American studies is open to students who have already earned their master's degree or to exceptional undergraduates who hold only a bachelor's degree. The program curriculum is divided in two primary areas of concentration as well as a sequence of coursework in general studies. Students can choose from a number of different specializations, including Asian American history and culture, American environmental history, Hawaiian history, historic preservation and American arts.
