Playing for an Ivy League sports team is a challenging but worthy goal.
Ivy league schools are famous for both top notch academics and athletics. Unlike other schools, Ivy League universities do not give athletic scholarships. To play sports for an Ivy League school, you must be a full-time student, then try out for the team. While it is not an easy feat, with patience, dedication and hard work it is certainly possible to accomplish. Gear up and get ready to play the game you love, endear yourself to fans, and get a world-class education.
Instructions
1. Research the athletic departments, sports teams and admissions requirements of the Ivy league universities by visiting their websites. The members of the Ivy League are Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania, Yale University.
2. Select and apply for admission to the Ivy league universities of your choice. Highlight your athletic achievements. Remember that academic records, personal statements, letters of recommendation, standardized test scores and extra-curricular activities will substantially affect your chances of admission.
3. Contact the coaches of the teams you hope to play for at your chosen schools via e-mail. Talk to your high-school coach for guidance with the process of getting in touch with college coaches.
4. Ask the Ivy League coaches what steps you can take to improve your chances of admission and your chances of playing for their team. Follow their advice.
5. Request a "likely" letter from the Ivy League coach. Coaches at Ivy League schools can request that prospective applicants receive a "likely" letter from the admissions office. A "likely" letter is sent by Ivy League schools to prospective student-athletes; it does not guarantee admission, but states that the school intends to accept the prospective student if she continues to achieve at a consistent level.
6. Decide which Ivy League school you want to attend after receiving notification of your acceptances. Discuss this decision with your high school coach and each Ivy League coach, as well as your guidance counselor, family and friends.
7. Contact the coach of the team that you want to play for at the school you have decided to attend. Ask what you should do to maximize your chances of playing for the team. Follow his advice.
8. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center and complete any university or department-specific athletic eligibility process -- including physical examinations and academic requirements -- with the guidance of the Ivy League coach, athletic department staff and counselors.
9. Find out when tryouts for the team are being held.
10. Show up for the tryout on time and showcase your athletic ability.
