Scholarship & Grants For African Americans

Some scholarships require applicants to be involved in community programs.

Scholarships and grants for African Americans target students who need financial help to attend an accredited school. Many scholarships are awarded upon scholastic achievement and work in the community. The scholarships and grants are generally paid directly to the school to help pay tuition, class fees and books. Certain scholarships allow the recipient to re-apply each year.

Ron Brown Scholar Program

African American high school seniors can apply for the Ron Brown Scholar Program. Those already enrolled in college are not eligible. As of 2011, the program awards 10 scholarships in the amount of $10,000 annually for four years. The application requires SAT test results, letters of recommendation and school transcripts. Applications are screened and the remaining candidates participate in a weekend selection program in Washington D.C., where interviews and various activities are held. Applicants are required to participate in the activities. Award recipients are informed of the scholarship after the weekend.

The Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship

African American high school seniors who have a financial need and who show a dedication to their community may apply for the Jackie Robinson Foundation scholarship. The applicants must be U.S. citizens, plan on attending a two- or four-year accredited school and have a combined score of 1000 in math and critical thinking on the SAT test. The test scores and a letter of recommendation are required with the application.

United Negro College Fund

Many organizations work together to fund college tuition for African American students. The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) provides an online application process to students interested in applying for one or more scholarship awards. The UNCF website provides a list of the available scholarships, as well as the criteria for application. The general application matches applicants with available awards. Some of the scholarship programs require a separate application and specific information, such as grade point averages, community involvement and letters of recommendations.

Jack and Jill Scholarships

The Jack and Jill of America Foundation offers a scholarship to African American high school seniors carrying a minimum 3.0 grade point average. As of 2011, the scholarship award ranged from $1,500 to $2,500. The scholarship is for tuition and room and board at the college. All college locations and majors are accepted for the Jack and Jill scholarship. The applicant must plan on attending a four-year college and work towards a bachelor's degree in his chosen field.
