In 2009, more than 700,000 Texans worked in education-related occupations.
Education-related studies are fixtures in the academic catalogs at Houston community colleges. With the shortage of educators in the Texas metropolis, two-year associate degree programs at city community colleges are an affordable way to increase the number of qualified educators in the field.
Houston Community College
Houston Community College, established in 1971, has six campuses in Houston, each of which offers the associate of arts in teaching degree. The program includes options for teaching at all grade levels, and all curricula require such general education courses as English literature, college algebra and American history I and II. The college has articulation agreements with several local public colleges and universities that allow students to easily transfer into four-year baccalaureate programs. Texas A&M University and the University of Houston are a few of the institutions where Houston Community College teaching graduates can continue their pursuit of teacher certification and education studies.
