Newsletters can be created in a variety of software programs.
Editing a newsletter is similar to other types of editing. However, because you are editing text in a newsletter template, you want to make certain that your formatting is as you want it to be. Review your newsletter by having a list of items that you need to check text, formatting and overall design.
Editing Text
Read through the text of the newsletter carefully. You may want to create a checklist of items you want to look for. These items may include proper grammar, typographical errors, sentence flow and proper attribution. It may be a good idea to have at least two people review the newsletter text to make certain that is has been corrected thoroughly.
Reviewing Format
Reviewing the formatting of each page is important as well. The newsletter should display the pictures and text in a way that enhances the text and pictures. Make certain, for instance, that the pictures that go with an article, such as the picture of the article writer, is not too big. Check that an article is placed near the pictures that go with it. Try to have an even balance of pictures and text. Note that pictures do not have to be photographs; it can be clip art.
Checking the Overall Appearance
The overall appearance of the newsletter should be checked before publishing. Whether it is web or print publishing, you want the newsletter to look like something a person wants to read. Make certain that it is easy to read; the article titles are clear and in a much larger font than the article text; the title of the newsletter is clear; and the newsletter overall does not look too "busy." There should be a balance between the text and pictures.
Software Programs
In addition to basic word processing programs, there is a variety of publishing software that helps you to create newsletters on your computer. Programs include Serif Page Plus, Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Publisher, QuarkXPress, Broderbund and others.
