Several Indiana schools offer Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programs.
More than 40 colleges and universities operate within the state of Indiana. A large number of these institutions offer at least one graduate degree program. For potential applicants seeking admission to a Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy program, a broad range of options exist at Indiana's degree-awarding public and private colleges and universities.
Indiana University System
The Indiana University System includes eight campus across the state, three of which operate jointly with the Purdue University System. More than 70 percent of students are affiliated with the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses. The Indiana University System offers more than 300 unique master's and doctoral degrees in the humanities, sciences, social sciences, education, business and other fields. Some of these programs at Indiana University are ranked among the top in the nation. U.S. News & World Report has ranked the university's School of Library and Information Science, which awards both Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, within the nation's top 10 programs for several years.
Purdue University System
The Purdue University System consists of seven campuses, including three which hold dual affiliation with the Indiana University System. Purdue's main campus in West Lafayette, Indiana is home to the majority of the university's 100 graduate programs. The majority of Purdue's Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programs are in health sciences, agriculture, engineering and other science-related disciplines. However, Purdue also offers Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy courses of study for humanities and human services. Highest-ranked graduate programs at Purdue include analytical chemistry, software engineering, computer science and mathematics.
Other State Universities
Three public universities in Indiana, outside of the two major university systems, offer Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science degrees in a range of fields. Ball State University grants graduate degrees in several areas, including landscape architecture --- which The Almanac of Architecture and design has ranked as one of the best in the nation. Indiana State University, classified as a Doctoral Research University by the Carnegie Foundation, provides more than 90 graduate programs and offers Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in nursing, biology, counseling, health and consumer sciences, and other sociology and education-related disciplines. The University of Southern Indiana does not grant Doctor of Philosophy degrees, but offers Master of Science degrees in education, industrial management, occupational therapy and nursing.
Private Colleges and Universities
In addition to public institutions, Indiana is also home to a number of private colleges and universities. The majority of these institutions offer at least one Master of Science degree, and some also award Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The University of Notre Dame, Butler University, and Valparaiso University are among Indiana institutions offering the widest variety of graduate programs. U.S. News & World Report ranks several of Notre Dame's Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in engineering and science as top national programs. Butler university, ranked as the top "up-and-coming" university in the Midwest, offers Master of Science degrees primarily in education and health-related fields. Valparaiso University is best known for its nationally renowned engineering program. The university also offers Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in technology, business, nursing, humanities and education.
