Teach Kids The Letter Song

Teaching your child the letter song is a process, and it's an important one. Children who enter kindergarten knowing the letters of the alphabet--specifically their shapes and names--will learn to read more easily than their peers who didn't know the alphabet's letters.

Instructions

1. Sing the alphabet to your child during other activities. Do this when your child is very young while changing his diaper, driving in the car or giving him a massage.

2. Read your child books that include alphabet letters, such as "Dr. Seuss's ABC," as she gets older. Focus on the pages that have long sequences of letters, such as all of the letters from "A" through "P," and sing them to the tune of the letter song.

3. Omit letters that you think your child knows and applaud when he fills in the correct letters. For example, leave out "G" or "P" while singing the song to see if he can fill them in.

4. Encourage your child to sing the song with you by making it more entertaining. For example, dance to the song or sing it in a funny voice.

5. Encourage your child to "perform" for family members and friends to show how important people think it is that she knows her ABCs.
