The Lonestar State is known for many things, and they say that everything is bigger in Texas. This estimation can include the success of their medical schools, many of which have been consistently ranked top among the country's medical schools by "U.S. News & World Report." Those seeking educations and professions in the medical field may want to consider medical schools in Texas for their continuing education.


Baylor College of Medicine


The foundation for the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, was actually laid in Dallas in 1900. Since then, the college has gone through a number of name and location changes, as well as curriculum changes that have left it atop the list of acclaimed medical schools in the country.


According to the Baylor College of Medicine's website, the school was ranked 17th overall nationwide among medical schools by the 2010 "U.S. News & World Report." The school was recognized for its research and primary care.


The college is actually located within the Texas Medical Center, and it is affiliated with a number of other medical centers, including Texas Children's Hospital and the M.D. Anderson Cancer center. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center


Since 1969, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center has graduated more than 3,000 physicians, and about 20 percent of all practicing physicians in western Texas have graduated from the Texas Tech school or residency programs. Texas Tech focuses on advancing research in the medical field, encouraging students to research and practice specializations ranging from cancer to addiction.


The campus in Lubbock, Texas, features programs and degrees available for a large range of medical specialties, including general and family practice, anesthesiology, psychiatry and emergency medicine.

Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine


The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine has also been nationally recognized for its accomplishments. The college's website advises that the "U.S. News & World Report" magazine has ranked the college among the top 50 medical schools in the United Stares for primary care for seven consecutive years, up through 2010. For 2010 the college was also ranked among the top 20 schools focusing on family medicine.


The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine was founded in 1970, and since then its trainees treat about 500,000 patients per year in hospitals and clinics in and around Fort Worth, Texas.


The osteopathic school is also associated with a graduate program in biomedical science as well as programs for physician assistant studies. Students can focus on general practice, pediatrics and surgery, among other things.
