The Average Gmat Score For The Top Business Schools

The GMAT consists of three main parts.








Going to business school for an MBA gives a student the necessary skills and credentials to further his career. Taking the GMAT, or Graduate Management Admissions Test, for admission to business school is similar to taking the SAT for admission to an undergraduate program. The GMAT is the standard test accepted for business school admissions. Knowing what GMAT score the top programs accept will help you in your preparation for the test.


Average GMAT Score for Top Schools


According to the GMAT CAT website, the average worldwide GMAT score is 570. For a Top 50 business school program, the average score is 660. Generally, the higher your prospective program ranks, the higher your GMAT score should be. The top U.S. business school programs include the Harvard Business School, University of Pennsylvania Wharton School, Stanford University Graduate School of Business, MIT Sloan School of Management and the Yale University School of Management. The average score for these schools ranges from 710 to 720, according to the GMAT Cat website.


About the GMAT


Most top business school programs require that applicants take the GMAT. The GMAT is a standardized test that consists of three main parts: math, verbal and analytical writing. The math section consists of 37 multiple choice questions on data sufficiency and problem solving. The verbal section consists of 41 multiple choice questions that cover reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction. For the analytical writing section, test-takers must complete two writing tasks: an analysis of an issue and an analysis of an argument.


Taking the GMAT


The GMAT is administered around the country year-round at test centers. According to MBA.com, the test costs $250 and can be taken once every month and no more than five times in a year, if necessary. On the day of the test, you should bring a government-issued photo ID that includes your signature, birth date and full name. To register for the test, create an MBA.com account and sign up for the test on the MBA website.








Improving Your GMAT Score


If you have already taken the GMAT and your score is not close to the average for your prospective program, there are ways to improve your score. The MBA website offers a free GMATPrep software download to help you prepare for the test with sample questions. Other options include the GMAT Paper test, which allows you to buy three downloads of previous tests.
