Online programs are abundant for this field, but physical campuses offering diplomas and certificates in a traditional educational setting also thrive.
Kaplan University
Medical billing and coding certificates can be earned through Kaplan University's continuing education program. This online program is intended for those with a high school diploma or GED. Students entering this program must demonstrate basic computer skills with a challenge exam or proof of successfully completing a college-level computer course. An Introduction to Computer Skills course is available for those students entering the medical coding program who need computer training.
The coding and billing certificates are offered separately, requiring eight courses each. Each certificate can be earned in 12 months or less. Tuition costs for the coding and billing programs are $3,695 and $3,595, respectively.
Virginia College
With 14 campuses in seven southeastern states and a fully operational online option, Virginia College is a growing school offering certificates and diplomas in medical coding and billing. The college possesses personalized service, real-world experience, career placement assistance, financial aid, flexible class schedules and small class sizes. A high school diploma or GED is required for admission. The programs differ slightly by state and by level of completion (degree or certificate), but a minimum of 60 quarter-hour credits are required.
Everest College
Everest College has 100 campuses across the United States offering day, night, and weekend classes. It also has an online education program. The medical billing and coding program offers simulated practice of the manual and electronic preparation of insurance claims. You will also practice interviewing and documenting skills to obtain and record patient information and manage and complete claims. Everest College offers practical hands-on training, financial aid, job search help and a well-known reputation.
National American University
The health care coding diploma is available online and through 17 National American University locations. The program teaches students the necessary skills to compete in this in-demand health care field. The school is currently pursuing accreditation through the American Health Information Management Association to prepare program graduates for the certification examination required to become certified coding associates.
