A first impression is a lasting impression. Potential employers see you, before they actually speak with you. A clean, polished and professional appearence for a job intereview is a larger selling point than many would think. Generally speaking, for interviews in the business, financial, and medical sectors, applicants should dress one step above what is considered standard, or even what may be worn on the actual job. You cannot dress too formally for a job interview in this field of business.
Medical Assistant Attire for Males
Conservative works best. A clean, pressed, solid-color suit is a smart choice. Black, navy, brown, or khaki are probably the most common colors in suits. If you do opt for something other than a solid color, keep pin-stripes and textures subtle and to a minimum. Flashiness is distracting, and draws attention away from the largest selling point - you. A solid solor shirt in white, blue, or beige which compliments the suit, and a coordinating tie should also be worn. Lastly, dark socks and shoes are appropriate for this look.
If a full suit is not an option, an alternative would be dress slacks with a coordinating jacket would be acceptable. Again, choose muted colors, and keep flashy colors, prints, or textures to a minimum.
Medical Assistant Attire for Females
Like the male applicants, females should also stick to a conservative suit for the interview. Females do have the option of choosing a suit with slacks or a skirt. If a skirt suit is chosen, it not be much shorter than to the knee. It should also be clean, pressed, and coordinated with a light-colored blouse or camisole (depending on the cut of the suit, and the neckline). The suit should be paired with matching hosiery and heeled shoes which are closed-toe, and not to strappy or flashy. Jewelry should be kept tasteful and also coordinate with the attire. Heavy make-up is not suggested either.
Hints and Tips
You are working in the medical profession. Both during the interview, and at the job, you may be interacting with patients on a daily basis who may have any number of illnesses, allergies, or other sensitivities. Things like cologne, perfume, body spray, and even strong-smelling shampoos should be avoided in consideration of patients. Also, as patients come to your place of business with concerns over their health, your own healthy appearence and mannerisms are highly regarded. Be mindful of germs, and the ways in which they are spread. It is smart to keep things like tissues and anti-bacterial gels or lotions nearby - both for health of you and the patients. Clean appearences and habits are impressionable, and will make a difference.
