Make Anagrams Of Names

An anagram is a rearrangement of letters in a word or phrase to create a new word or phrase. Often, the rearrangement relates to or comments on the original word or phrase. Anagrams can be short or long. Some anagrammists have gone so far as to brave whole sentences, or even entire passages, to create anagrams. Making anagrams of names is one of the most popular ways to play this fun word game. You can do it by hand using only your own ingenuity, or you can have an anagram program do the calculations for you.

Instructions

Anagrams by Hand

1. To make anagrams of names by hand, first write down the name you wish to anagrammatize. For best results, use both the first and last names, as well as the middle name.

2. You may choose to keep the names separate, or you may elect to bunch all the words together as one, so you can see all the letters clearly for close examination.

3. Try shuffling the letters at random, writing the new string of letters below the name you wrote down. This will shake things up enough so that you can get some fresh ideas as to which letters can possibly go with which.

4. Use your understanding of vowels and consonants to form small spelling units to work with. For example, you know that the letter "Q" cannot be followed by the letter "X". However, the letter "B" and "A" can easily go together, as in the word "bat" or "bartender."

5. Play with different combinations of letters, working out words one at a time, reshuffling and rearranging as you get closer and closer to forming a phrase or statement that makes sense grammatically.

6. To make things easier, you may use punctuation to separate letters and words in your name anagram. For example, you may use a period or comma to break the anagram into two phrases or short sentences. Use all the punctuation available to you!

7. Through trial-and-error and quiet contemplation, you will eventually create an anagram by hand. If you succeed, see if you can create another one using the same letters. Believe it or not, the possibilities are endless.

Anagrams by Computer Program

8. To make anagrams of names using a computer program, all you have to do is enter the name you wish to anagram and watch the results pour in. The results might astound you. Most names are capable of generating thousands of anagrams.

9. Use advanced search parameters to narrow down the list of anagram results. For example, if you only want anagrams made of three words at most, you can request that in the advanced search options.

10. Find anagram generators on the internet, as Web-based anagram generators make use of the largest and most up-to-date dictionaries (including slang). Some anagram generators may be too advanced for some people, as these advanced models tend to offer an overwhelming array of results. Try different programs and choose a favorite depending on your needs.
