Correct planning will ensure you graduate with your doctorate.
Working for your doctorate requires an almost completely different skill set than those needed for the degrees that came before it. Where they were concerns with class study with little room for individuality, the doctorate, or Ph.D., is focused and steered entirely by individual choice. You define what you want to study. Once you combine that with the extended time needed to complete a Ph.D. you may have an extremely daunting task unless you plan correctly.
Instructions
1. Design a wall planner using art paper and different color markers to indicate the four areas you'll need to complete to attain your doctorate. These four areas of study will consist of coursework, examinations, a dissertation and teaching and research. Then put all the important dates you'll need, such as meetings with your tutor, term dates, research appointments and examination dates on the wall planner.
2. List under each heading everything you'll need to complete that section of your Ph.D. For the coursework, list every course you'll need to complete and the dates they begin and end. Make notes in a notebook on what research you'll need to complete and note down the titles of any books that may be useful. This will also help immensely with exam revision, as you will have a clear structure of what to revise for each course.
3. Make a similar list for your dissertation, noting the areas you want to cover and research to be done. In addition, note down important dates such as when your research should be completed, meetings with your supervisor and dates when draft sections are due to be completed. Likewise, note down what courses you are assisting with and any research that needs to be done around them to ensure you're well read and prepared for the course.
4. Refer to the wall planner and note book daily to ensure you stay on track.
