Living In America As An International Student

The United States has the No. 1 international student population in the world. Learn to overcome the challenge of living in America as an international student by using the best resources.

Prepare to live and study in America


1. Research your new environment and determine where you will stay. Start with the International Student website. See Resources.


2. Familiarize yourself with the college campus by locating the map on the school's website. Note the location of the student services building, the counseling center and the college library. Keep these notes on your person when you go to school.


3. Communicate with your host family. Ask about local job resources. Inquire about means of transportation. Work out your schedule for commuting and job hunting in advance.


4. Take English as a Second Language classes (ESL). Communicate with the teacher before and after class. The ESL teacher understands that you are new to the English language, and expects you to ask lots of questions.


5. Visit the student center office for information on roommates, doctors, school events, and school life.


6. Visit the career center for information on careers and transfers to other colleges.


7. Talk to other international students about opening a bank account and getting a driver's license.


8. Talk to native English speakers. Join sports, arts, music clubs or any other type of organization where you will meet English speaking people.
