Activities For Sorority Recruitment

Young women can learn leadership and teamwork skills as part of a sorority.

Since their emergence on American collegiate campuses in 1851, Greek sororities have developed into a mainstay of many young women's lives on a college campus. Each year, sororities aim to attract new members through recruitment activities and social functions. By showing potential members a glimpse into sorority life, these female Greek organizations hope to continue their longstanding traditions by gaining new sisters each year.

Body-Image Fairs

In an effort to bring awareness to social topics, sororities can draw attention to the serious problem of eating disorders among young women by hosting body-image fairs. Open to the campus, these fairs can focus on helping people create a positive self-image. Body-image fairs can provide attendees with information on eating disorders, contact information for counseling and body acceptance tips as well as helping to create a healthy diet and exercise plan. By hosting a body-image fair, sororities can demonstrate their dedication to bring awareness to eating disorders and body-image issues. During the fair, sorority members can meet with potential members and talk about their sorority.

Dances

Hosting themed dances allows sororities to show new recruits the types of fun events they can be a part of if they join the organization. With the dance being open to the campus, attendees can take part in the sorority's chosen theme. Ensure that dance themes are appropriate for all in attendance. For example, host a sock hop, where guests dance in their socks. A disco party requires all attendees to dress in disco fashions and dance the night away to 1970s disco music. Sorority members can dress up with side ponytails and heavy eye makeup if they host a 1980s dance, where everyone can hit the dance floor to popular '80s hits.

Sisterhood Activities

For a more personal recruitment experience, invite potential sorority members to sisterhood activities. These events can be more intimate as they should only include sorority members and potential new sisters. For example, a sorority can host a "Sisterhood at the Spa" evening where they invite new recruits to the house. Bring in a professional beautician so that sorority members and their potential new sisters can get to know each other over manicures and pedicures. During the event, current sorority sisters can talk about what they enjoy about being in a sorority.

Sporting Event Food Drive

A sorority can combine the fun of sports with the importance of collecting food for those in need by hosting a food drive for recruitment at a sporting event. Before the game, sorority members can host a recruitment tailgate party where the price of admission is a non-perishable food item. Potential new members can attend their prospective sorority's tailgate party, learn about the organization and help to collect food for the needy.
