Follow A Student'S Individual Education Plan

Ensure that your student receives the most complete and comprehensive education a special education program can provide by closely following the goals and objectives set up for your student in the individual education plan (IEP) created for him or her.

Instructions

1. Request copies and explanations of every evaluation given to your student for special education placement purposes.

2. Ask specifically what part of the evaluation determined your student's need for services. Expect the explanation to be in clear, everyday language or in your primary mode of communication, such as sign language or a foreign language, if appropriate.

3. Help create the educational goals and objectives that your student must master in order to exit the special education program. Insist on clear, specific criteria for mastery. Ask for examples of how your student will be tested for mastery and how long mastery is expected to take.

4. Inquire about mastery status every grading period via an instructor note home or additional IEP meetings.

5. Initiate a teacher conference or an IEP meeting if your student is not meeting mastery criteria or if your student complains of instructional difficulty. Ask what modifications instructors are providing to assist the student in mastery. Ask what instructional changes have been made to meet the needs of your student.

6. Save all documentation concerning your student's mastery of goals and objectives on the IEP. Keep a list of what goals and objectives your student must meet to exit the special education program, and check them off when your student achieves mastery.

7. Attend every IEP meeting set up for your student. Have your student attend as well if it is appropriate.
