1. Work toward your goal to become an XML architect once you have completed the requirements to obtain a bachelor's degree in computer science. Note, however, that some employers will accept 2-year college level course completion in a related science in addition to work experience in the applications development industry.
2. Plan to spend 1 to 3 years in the software-engineering field, specifically with a company that uses an established protocol in SDLC (software development life cycle), such as the "Waterfall" method. This will provide you with a solid foundation to become an XML architect that runs the gamut from project planning and feasibility review to design, analysis, installation and deployment.
3. Develop a sixth sense for spotting situations where design methods may begin to fall short of the desired goal and when a fresh approach is needed. This is a key characteristic that many potential employers look for in an XML architect. In fact, most XML architects are groomed from in-house pools of developers by human-resource recruiters looking for this ability.
4. Hone your communication skills on multiple levels to meet the needs of your technical audience, as well as the corporate mindset concerned with the bottom line. Not only is the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing necessary to become an XML architect, but you may also find yourself expressing ideas and money-saving initiatives with other tools, such as diagramming software or drafting boards.
5. Demonstrate positive negotiating skills to prove your ability to become an XML architect. Conflicts are bound to arise between interested parties, and it may be your task to present various scenarios toward compromise and resolution.
6. Draft your resume to focus on each of the desired qualities with a "show, not tell" approach. This means to briefly highlight specific situations you have encountered in your background in which you successfully identified issues of concern. Highlight the steps you implemented to remediate them.
