Write a Personal Statement for College
The personal statement is an important part of the college admissions process. It gives college admissions officers additional insights into an applicant beyond what's revealed in the grades, test scores and list of extracurricular activities. At competitive universities, most applicants come with similarly high credentials. Without an effective personal statement, it will be harder to shine from the pack.
Instructions
1. Answer the questions being posed by the application. The personal statement may not be considered at all if it ignores the questions.
2. When answering the questions on the application, describe personal lessons, reflections and gains from each of your accomplishments.
3. If there were any obstacles encountered, discuss how they were overcome. If there weren't any obstacles, describe how opportunities that arose were taken advantage of.
4. Describe how personal traits such as leadership, initiative and caring were developed from achievements and accomplishments. Leadership potential is often very important.
5. If necessary, discuss the reasons for picking the major choice on the application. In some cases, career motivation is important in high-demand majors such as business, engineering, science and nursing.
6. Proofread the personal statement. Although personal statements are usually not graded for grammar, good writing leaves a better impression than bad writing.
