National Honor Society bases membership on scholastic achievement as well as character, activities and leadership.
National Honor Society invites high school students who show outstanding qualities in the areas of academics, leadership, character and community service to join the organization. Membership affords students special conference and scholarship opportunities in addition to recognition for scholarship and service. Students in the New York City public school district wishing to become part of NHS need to demonstrate these qualities through school and community involvement, coursework and personal standards. Requirements among the 600 high schools in the district may vary slightly, but they share the same basic process.
Instructions
1. Study hard to get good grades. Requirements for National Honor Society include a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale, or 85 percent.
2. Check with your school's National Honor Society chapter regarding grade requirements because they can vary. For instance, The Scholars' Academy school requires a cumulative average of at least 90 percent since the start of the sophomore year and no grades below 75 percent in any subject area.
3. Volunteer for community projects. National Honor Society requires students to take part in school or civic activities such as church group work or other social organizations' functions. You might volunteer in a soup kitchen or help gather donations for a church fundraiser.
4. Join school groups and run for offices or take on roles that require responsibility. You can demonstrate leadership by contributing ideas and showing dependability. Having a job, running for student government positions and taking on extracurricular activities all express leadership ability.
5. Follow rules. National Honor Society rules require members to demonstrate good character, meaning students must be honest, law-abiding, productive members of society. Adhere strictly to your school's honor code and avoid trouble with the law.
6. Ask about other requirements for your chapter. At M.J. Petrides school, for instance, students must obtain faculty references, write an essay and complete specific community service requirements such as 15 hours of official National Honor Society tutoring.
