The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for medical transcriptionists will increase by 11 percent from 2008 through 2018. Although not mandatory, having certification from the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) may increase transcriptionists' employment opportunities. To qualify for the certification exam student must first graduate from an AHDI-approved medical transcriptionist school, of which there are a number throughout the United States.
Winter Park Tech
A private, career-training college, Winter Park Tech is six miles northeast of Orlando, Florida in the suburban community of Winter Park. Among the college's 22 programs is an applied technology diploma in medical record transcribing. Coureswork is completed entirely online and requires about one year to complete. The school offers a computer lab on its campus, where students can go to access course material if they don't have computers of their own. The program includes classes in medical terminology, keyboarding, word processing and utilizing medical references. Federal and state grant and loan programs are offered for eligible students as well as a limited number of institutional scholarships. Job placement assistance is available.

Richland Community College
Located in Decatur, Illinois, Richland Community College is a public, two-year institution with more than 7,300 students. The college offers a one-year, three-semester-long medical transcription certificate program and a two-year associate degree program. Students working toward the degree take classes in keyboarding, editing and proofreading, word processing, databases, business communications, medical terminology, medical billing and coding, records management, voice transcription and legal terminology. An internship and final project are required for graduation. Federal and state loans and grants, scholarships and veteran's benefits are available for qualified students. Discount tuition rates are offered for students who live within Richland's district. An on-site daycare provided low-cost child care for students. The Career Services department offers job placement assistance for all graduates.

Everett Community College
Founded in 1941 in the town of Everett, Washington, Everett Community College is a public, two-year school school with more than 20,000 students. The college grants a certificate program in medical transcription that lasts for three quarters, approximately nine months. The program requires students to take classes in medical language, grammar, editing, anatomy, pharmacology, medical specialties, technology and speech recognition. All of the courses are offered entirely online for students' convenience. An internship is included in the curriculum as well. In addition to government financial aid programs and veteran's benefits, the college offers a limited number of scholarships and work study placements. Washington state residents receive reduced tuition rates. Academic advising, tutoring and personal counseling are available free-of-charge for students who need extra support.
