Music Colleges In Nyc

You can start your Broadway career early by attending a professional musical school in New York City.


As the home of Broadway musicals, the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Symphony Orchestra, it's not surprising that many of the best music schools in the country are in Manhattan. Most of these professional schools, like Juilliard, are conservatories, with a strong emphasis on educating performers. Other schools, like Columbia, emphasize the importance of a liberal arts education in addition to a musical education. All of them provide elite music education in one of the musical capitals of the world.


Columbia University


Columbia is located on the upper west side of Manhattan. Undergraduates can earn a B.A. in music, while graduate students can pursue doctoral degrees in music theory, composition, ethnomusicology or historical musicology. The university is also home to a Center for Jazz Studies.


The Juilliard School


The Juilliard School offers programs in dance, drama and music. An undergraduate student can earn a Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in composition, guitar, harpsichord, jazz studies, orchestral instruments, organ, piano or voice. Graduate students can earn a Masters of Music (M.M.) in those fields, in addition to collaborative piano, orchestral conducting or historical performance. The school is located at the famed Lincoln Center for the Arts in Manhattan, near Columbus Circle.


Manhattan School of Music


Undergraduates at the Manhattan School can major in either jazz or classical music and study over 30 other musical topics. Graduate students can also participate in an orchestral studies program. The school is located in the upper west side of Manhattan.


Mannes College at the New School for Music


Musicians can earn an undergraduate or master's degree at Mannes. Fields of study include orchestral instruments, piano, harpsichord, voice, conducting, classical guitar, composition and theory. The school is located on the upper west side of Manhattan.


New York University Steinhardt School


Undergraduate and graduate programs teach brass, woodwinds, strings, percussion, jazz, piano, music theater, opera, composition, film scoring, music business, music technology, music education, music therapy, dance education, educational theater, performing arts administration and drama therapy.


City University of New York


Among the colleges that comprise the CUNY system, five offer expansive, creative music degree programs. They are the City College of New York, Hunter College, the Graduate Center, Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music and Queens College. All schools offer undergraduate degrees in music theory or performance and they are all located within New York City limits.
