Learning successfully write an essay is critical to academic success. College students especially, need to familiarize themselves with the formal demands of essay writing. There are several important considerations to keep in mind when writing essay papers. However, preparation and research are equally as important as the actual writing process to help ensure you have all the pieces in place to write a great essay.
Instructions
1. Choose your topic and begin your research. Use the Internet to conduct web searches for relevant information. Look for credible sources online, such as journals and academic institutions and databases. Visit your local library to locate other sources. Take detailed notes.
2. Finalize, analyze and assemble your research. Organize by grouping similar thoughts, quotes or ideas together. Create an outline that lays out the framework for your essay.
3. Choose your thesis. Once you have organized and analyzed your research into a cohesive outline, decide on a central theme or argument for your essay. This is known as the "thesis." Strive to sum up the main point of your essay in a single concise sentence.
4. Write the introduction. The opening sentence must capture your reader's attention. For example: "Most people associate Detroit with a barren, desolate wasteland, but they would be surprised to know that it's actually an epicenter for urban farming." Follow up with several supporting thoughts. End your opening paragraph with your thesis statement.
5. Compose body paragraphs. Focus each individual paragraph on a single, separate thought that supports your thesis. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence, which describes a direction for the paragraph. Support the topic sentence with evidence that ties back to your thesis. Use any research and empirical data that you uncovered during the research and analysis phase.
6. Write your conclusion. In the final paragraph of your essay, restate the thesis. Recount supporting arguments to reinforce the conclusion advanced by your thesis. End with an intriguing quote or an idea that neatly affirms your thesis.
