Graduate Tax Programs

Many lawyers and accountants pursue tax degrees.

If you're interested in pursuing a law or graduate degree with a tax concentration, several reputable colleges and universities are available to consider during your decision-making process. Some graduate tax programs are specific to law, while others focus on accounting. Sometimes attorneys and accountants study side by side in the same classroom when pursuing their degrees.

New York University

New York University has the nation's top-ranked tax law program.

NYU's graduate tax program has been in operation for 60 years. Since 1992, "U.S. News and World Report" has ranked it as the nation's best tax law program. Enrolled students choose a course of study from one of five disciplines: Business Tax, Estate Planning, International Tax, Tax Policy and General Tax. NYU's graduate tax program has an alumni network of over 10,000 tax attorneys.

Georgetown University

Many of Georgetown University's adjunct professors make tax policy.

Georgetown's location in Washington, D.C., places students at the heart of where tax law is created. Because of this, the university has an extensive faculty of adjunct professors who have firsthand experience in congressional tax-writing committees, the IRS, the U.S. Tax Court and even the Department of the Treasury. Currently, Georgetown's enrollment in the tax program is 200 students, the highest of all its law school divisions.

Northwestern University

Northwestern University prides itself on a low student-to-instructor ratio.

Located in Chicago, Northwestern's tax program is a branch of the university's law school. One aspect of Northwestern's education of which the university is especially proud is the low student-to-instructor ratio. Because of this, it's easy to have a one-on-one relationship with your professors at Northwestern. Also, these professors have written much of the material used in the classroom, so they know the course lessons inside and out.
